A day in my life #2…

If you don’t already know about this project, it was conceived in the mind of Paper Napkin. Around the first of every month (there is some debate about whether it’s the 5th or the 6th but whatever) several of us keep track of our day and then blog about it in excruciating detail for you to read. Aren’t you lucky! So, here’s mine. If you have done this also, leave me a comment and I’ll link to you. So far, here’s Jennifer’s.

7:00 a.m. - alarm clock. Time to get the girls up for school. They eat yogurt and toast and watch a few morning cartoons. I am a few feet away on the computer checking email and the blogs I read regularly. We finally caved and ordered high speed internet last month and now this morning ritual takes only a fourth of the time it used to. Hooray!

7:30ish - I help the girls pick clothes to wear to school (why is this room so messy!) and do their hair. I’m not really very good at hair, not even my own. I can do ponytails and clips and braids that aren’t too crooked, but I just don’t have the touch. When my sister does their hair, my girls always look so soft and girly and pretty. My hairstyling tends to be more sturdy. Utilitarian mom, that’s me.

8:00 - carpool arrives. There is a last minute flurry for backpacks, lunch boxes and hugs and kisses and then they’re off. I watch from the window until they round the corner, then I eat a quick breakfast (granola) and change into my exercise clothes.

8:10 - treadmill, treadmill, treadmill, free weights, free weights, free weights then shower, hair, and makeup. I don’t push myself on the treadmill as hard as I probably could but I still work up a sweat and burn some calories so I’m happy. About the only time I watch TV or movies is when I’m running. Today I finish A League of Their Own. Good show, very underrated and oh my goodness but Geena Davis is tall!

9:30 - Work. I spend most of the time proofing a 200 page document I typed last week but I also send a few emails and mess with a couple of spreadsheets. My sister goes through her exercise routine (much more strenuous than mine) and then we chat a bit while she eats breakfast. She showers and then disappears to her room to study and I go back to work.

11:18 - My day to pick up the Kindergarteners. Two of the kids hop in the car and immediately announce that they have to go soooo bad and they forgot to go at school so can I please hurry. I give them the “do NOT pee in my car” lecture and drive a little faster than usual. We make it home safe and sound and accident-free. Whew!

11:30 - Mia and I discuss her day and go through her backpack together. Tomorrow is the last day of school so she has brought home a lot of papers and art and even a scrapbook the teacher has made for her. We look at it and I can’t believe how much she’s learned and how much she’s grown in the past year.

12:00 - Get lunch for Mia (strawberries and bread with butter) then she watches a movie while I do more work. I nibble on my lunch while I’m working (a tortilla, an apple, and a chocolate chip cookie). When Mia’s movie ends she sets up an elaborate playhouse on the living room floor. She DOES NOT need my help, thankyouverymuch, so I keep working. It’s great to have the computer in the main living area instead of the spare bedroom, I feel so much more involved.

2:00 - Mia and I play a game of Sorry, then she goes back to the playhouse while I do several loads of laundry and hem a pair of pants for my mom. I have a new machine that is awesome, so very, very awesome!

No so much the laundry. Why, why, why is there so much! Somewhere in my tiny brain there is a problem because I am unable to recognize the connection between this huge pile of laundry I’m tripping over in my closet, and the fact that I have nothing decent to wear. Seriously. I just don’t get it. So there are no clothes and I am sad thinking we must soon resort to wearing flour sacks because there.are.no.clothes.in.this.house. And what do I do? Go out and buy more clothes! Naturally. Problem solved! Then I do laundry and suddenly we have so many clothes. So, so many! And then I’m grumpy because why do we have so much crap!

3:30 - I leave Mia with my sister and go to pick up Amy from school. When she gets home, they want to swim so I help them uncover the pool and slather on the sunscreen. Then I come back in for more work but first I get distracted reading other blogs (probably yours!) for about half an hour.

5:45 - Dan comes home, the kids come in and get dressed, then we run errands. We have several things to return and we also shop for gifts for the girls’ teachers. We decide on gift certificates to a local restaurant and a bag of Harry & David chocolate truffles from Target - soooo good!! We stop for Chinese takeout on the way home and I hurry and wrap the truffles so I don’t accidentally eat them.

7:30 - No homework since it’s the last week of school so the girls and I read stories and they play a bit more while I make some phone calls and straighten the kitchen. Dan putters around the backyard, covering the pool, locking the gate, and pulling a few weeds.

8:30 - Help the girls get ready for bed and tuck them in. Dan watches TV while I do more work. I don’t usually work quite this much every day but I have a big project to finish.

11:00 - Bedtime. I get in my pj’s and then spend about half an hour reading (Moby Dick) before lights out. Dan has been asleep on the couch since about 9:30; I wake him up so he can stagger in to bed.

11:30 - The end.

Hey! I’m glad you did one this month. As you know, so did I - here’s the link for anyone else who stops by:

I didn’t know your sister lived (is staying?) with you. And despite your disclaimer, I am bowled over by the amount of time you spent working. I’m trying to quit my freelance jobs because I just don’t have the will for it anymore.
