…and whatever

Insomnia

I’ve been having a hard time sleeping lately (obviously because it’s 1:30 in the morning and I’m posting here). I don’t know why I can’t sleep. I have been exercising more lately and have started eating a little - a very little - bit better, but that’s supposed to help me sleep better, not worse, isn’t it? What’s the deal? The other night I didn’t fall asleep until almost 4 a.m. I laid there for about an hour, then gave up and worked for a while before trying again and laying there for another hour before finally drifting off. Ugh! I had to get up early to get the kids to school so I didn’t dare take a Unisom, even though they were sitting in my bathroom taunting me.

A side effect of the insomnia is general loopiness, of course. Last week after the 4 a.m. episode I almost went topless to pick up the kids from school. I was blow drying my hair in just my bra and jeans because it was so hot, then I went to get in the car and oooo…breezy! I’m pretty sure I flashed at least one of the neighbors, possibly more.

Cheap class - or glass, take your pick

We bought new glasses (as in drinking glasses) the other day because we are hard on breakable things at my house. Especially things made of glass. Picture frames, dishes, storm doors…break, break, break. So when we got down to maybe four glasses and there are five of us living here, it was time to shop. We went to Wal-Mart because I refuse to spend big bucks on something I’ll be scooping into the trash in a matter of weeks. We picked out a nice not-too-plain, not-too-ugly set of glasses and when I unpacked them, I noticed they were weird. Kind of tippy and wavy and a little bendy. Not one is actually completely straight.

That got me thinking, because I’m strange and like to ponder on this kind of stuff. Whenever I shop for something really expensive like leather, silk, pottery, etc., there are always defects. You know what I’m talking about, differences in the grain, little slubs in the fabric, color changes in the glaze… Anyway, the salespeople always eagerly assure me that these variations are supposed to be there. It’s a sign of craftsmanship, they say, and I should be proud of the defects because it means I’m purchasing quality.

So that’s the stance I’m taking with my new glasses. Cheap glass that’s bendy, weird, and wavy? On purpose! Handmade! We’re classy!

And why I’m blogging about this, I have no idea except that it’s almost 1:30 in the morning and I can’t sleep. Hello internet, my friend!

Amazon Woman, that’s me

We went to visit my parents over the weekend and my sisters and I ended up moving sprinkler pipes with our dad. Sprinkler pipes on the farm - - As in big long pipes - - As in pipes that weigh over 200 pounds when full of water. Are you impressed yet? (Of course we didn’t move them full of water, silly, but I did have to tip them up to drain.)

But still…long, heavy, unwieldy pipe moved by me, a 110 pound weakling. I used to do this as a teenager but I’m significantly more wimpy now so it was very satisfying to know I can still do it.

See…big! Aren’t you proud?
Big messy, heavy sprinkler pipes

This isn’t me, BTW. I stole this picture from an agricultural site, but you get the idea. Only I got much dirtier than these people. Mud is my friend.

Incidentally, I had a friend in college who also grew up on a farm and told me he used to move sprinkler pipes in the nude.

Um…no.
