It just gives and gives.
This is what happens when you neglect the garden… I have one plant, you guys. One. And it has produced all of this in only a few days. Zucchini always seems sort of weirdly pathetic to me. It’s so eager to please. I will grow for you, it says. You, who cannot grow any other green thing, you whose flowers die in a day even though they are guaranteed by FTD. I shall grow for you that you may be made whole by my abundance.* Actually not. I do enjoy a bit of squash from time to time, but this is ridiculous. Tonight we are going stage a midnight operative and loose the Zucchino-Bandito upon the neighborhood to leave zucchini scored with tiny z’s on unsuspecting porches. * I’m not sure why the zucchini plant sounds like a Danielle Steele novel, but it just seemed right. Also, it seems to have a faint Irish accent. Again, a mystery. Last week was my birthday and it was sufficiently uneventful to please me. When I was younger I used to secretly hope everyone would forget my birthday so I could suffer silently and with great nobility and everyone would feel terrible when they realized what had happened. (There’s a bit of a dramatic, melancholic streak about me, have you noticed?) Now I really don’t care. I don’t put much store in birthdays (except the girl’s) and I don’t like it when people make a fuss over mine. So Dan worked, I worked, we had cake and ice cream, the end. Five years ago today… Has it really been five years? It seems like only yesterday when the Twin Towers fell and the world changed. I visited New York in 2004 and the feeling of reverence and sorrow at Ground Zero was still very tangible. I also went to Smithsonian in Washington DC and saw the flag that had covered the gaping hole in the Pentagon. I don’t understand how anyone can hate so much. May we never forget our heroes.

Okay, here’s whatcha do:
Mix:
2 Cups grated zucchini
1/2 Cup oil
2 eggs
1/2 tsp grated lemon peel
1/2 tsp nutmeg
2 tsp cinnamon
1 Cup raisins
Sift in:
3 Cups flour
2 Cups sugar (also good with less)
1/2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
Spoon into paper-lined muffin tins and bake 15-20 minutes at 350 (175 C). Makes 24.
(Or bake 55-60 minutes in two greased loaf pans.)
Even Makayla will eat it that way. (When they start to taper off, you can use the recipe the way it’s intended, with half zucchini and half shredded carrots).
And, off topic, OMG how clean is your rug??
