Deer in Headlights

I am scheduled to give a 45 minute presentation to Amy’s class this afternoon about what I do all day. Kind of a condensed career day of sorts.

Only..what do I do all day?

Why do I sign up for stuff like this? The calendar came around at the beginning of the school year, way back in July when I was optimistic and sucking up to the teacher. October seemed so far away that it would never get here and even if it did, there was enough time to come up with a whole bunch of great ideas. My life would be so exciting by October! Twenty-five third graders would be in awe of my splendor.

So here we are. I have to present in a little over an hour and I have no idea what I’ll say - for 45 minutes! Originally I was going to talk about costuming since it’s so close to Halloween, but how boring is that for a 9-yr-old boy? Can you even imagine the eye-rolling as I prattle on about seam finishes and hem lengths. Come to think of it, I’ll bet the girls would be bored too if I start in on that.

So I’ve been brainstorming and here is a partial list of ideas to tell the kids what I do all day:

1. Febreeze is your friend - 88 ways to procrastinate doing the laundry.

2. It’s not clutter, it’s art!

3. Hamburger surprise strikes back - what to fix for dinner when you’re out of groceries.

4. Attack of the dust bunnies - also useful for spring-boarding that dreaded reproduction conversation.

Think any of those will work? Yeah, I’m dead.

I happened to have a conversation just this week with someone whose brother went to a career day thing at his daughter’s school. But he’s a member of the cabin crew on Costa Rica’s major airline, so he had something of an advantage.

So how did yours go? Did you tout the latest Bernina? Dissect the relative merits of dictionary vs thesaurus? Just sit there watching their eyes glaze over? Do tell…

    So… How did it go??

By the way, Jennifer, do you know what you get when you roll up a thesaurus?

    A synonym roll!

(I know, *groan* But I happen to know that Laylabean is a fan of puns.)
