The longest babysitting job ever.

Sometimes the knowledge that I have children really freaks me out. Even though they’ve been around for a while now, there are times when I still can’t quite comprehend that I’m closer to middle-age than youth and there are two (soon to be three) little people who live here and depend on me.

It seems like they just moved into my space and took over. They don’t ask if they can put their shoes under my pillow or unwind an entire ball of yarn all over the house or leave their dirty underwear in the bathroom, they just do it. And I’m left to wander among the debris looked bewildered and vaguely confused. Who dumped milk all over the counter - or - Why is the fridge encased in duct tape? (Both events from today.)

This is especially true when the girls are off track, like now. After six weeks of school, suddenly they’re here - all the time, wanting attention and entertainment. There are times when I look up from whatever I’m doing and my first thought is, When is your mother coming to get you? And then I remember that I am the mother and how I act in any given situation could determine how much therapy they’ll need 20 years from now.

It’s just weird.

Who trusted me with this job and for the love of bacon, why?

I can’t answer your questions, but I love bacon too.

So, why was the fridge encased in duct tape?

I have no idea! My six-year-old loves tape and is constantly plastering it everywhere. We’ve had to lay down some rules about what she can and can’t cover though, especially with the newly painted walls.

Maybe she’ll grow up to be some type of avant garde tape artist.

Ah. That I can understand. I have a thing for tape myself. I make sure I have a role of duct tape when I travel. And my family has given me roles of clear packing tape as gifts before. You can laminate a lot of things with clear packing tape. I also like having several different types of masking tape on hand - extra wide and different colors.

I have never encased a fridge in duct tape though.
