Nine-Year-Old
Today is Amy’s ninth birthday. Nine! Almost a decade. It’s gone by like lightning and I know the next nine years will be just as fast and suddenly I’ll be writing about her leaving home. That seems like such an impossible thing, I can hardly imagine it. I’m glad we don’t live someplace where boarding school is the norm or she’d be leaving me in two years instead of nine. Nine years ago right now we were waiting. I’d checked into the hospital the night before because I was being induced and the medicine to start dilation had to be given in advance. They started pitocin around 7:00 a.m. and she wasn’t born until 6:45 that night. It was a long, anxious day. The cord was around her neck and with each contraction her heart rate would plummet, then recover. Labor went very slowly and just as the doctor started talking about a c-section, I started dilating and she was born an hour later. Amy is a very strong girl and she’s had to be to put up with us. As the oldest, she’s the kid we’ve made the majority of our mistakes on, and that probably will continue. She’s a wonderful big sister, loving and kind to her baby brother and her little sister. She’s imaginative, playful, creative, joyful, smart, and she has a keen sense of humor. As she gets older, I catch glimpses of how she’ll be as an adult and I know that I’ll have a friend as well as a daughter. I’m so grateful for that day nine years ago when this little spirit entered our lives. Happy birthday, my girl! I love you SO much!
