Tagged - Seven Things

Mr. Me has tagged me with a Seven Things You May not Know About Me meme. (Wow, that’s a lot of “me” in that sentence. It is a blog after all.) I’ve decided to mix it up a little and change it to the Seven Things You May not Know About Me - Food Edition.

1. I don’t like raspberries in anything but jam or syrup. Raspberry jam is my favorite.

2. In college we experimented with washing our hair with raw eggs. It was supposed to give it more glow and body but I don’t remember seeing a difference. I do remember learning rather abruptly that if you’re going to use raw eggs in your hair, you have to also use cold water. The hour spent picking bits of scrambled egg out of my hair was not so fun.

3. The first dinner I made as a newlywed was spaghetti and meatballs, even though I’d never made meatballs before. They turned out pretty bland because I had not yet mastered the way of the herb. We ate sitting on the floor with a cardboard box as our table since we didn’t have a dining room set yet. My sister called while I was cooking and said “How cute - you’re making newlywed food!” I didn’t understand what she meant then but I do now. I don’t think I’ve made spaghetti with meatballs since; now I just stir the meat right into the sauce like a normal person.

4. I worked at McDonalds in high school and my favorite thing was a chocolate shake with a squirt of hot fudge sauce. I’d make it at the end of my shift and I think I gained about 10 pounds that summer!

5. Oysters are the worst thing I’ve ever eaten.

6. My mom used to make homemade chocolates for Christmas, my favorites were the coconut haystacks and the orange creams. One year she made nougat and it wouldn’t come out of the pan so she let the kids have it and we used butter knives to chip out little pieces. At some point, someone left their knife on the nougat and it sank. I still remember hacking away at the nougat around that big knife stuck in the middle.

7. Except for baking, I rarely follow recipes. I’ve gotten into the habit of just throwing things together and hoping it works. It usually does but sometimes it’s a bit imprecise. I’m roasting a chicken in my slow cooker for dinner tonight and I have no idea when it will be done. We could be eating at 5:00 or at midnight.
