Felt Food
I had to do a Discovery presentation in Amy’s class this morning and even though I’ve known about it for six months, of course I waited until the last minute to plan. Last year when I did this I talked about writing so this time I wanted to do sewing. Only, how do you keep 10-year-olds, especially boys, interested in sewing? I made these last night… Oh my goodness, the kids LOVED them! There were excited gasps and murmurs of “Coooool!” when I took them out of my bag. When I passed them around even the boys were studying them closely. My original plan was to let everyone make a felt cookie. But then I realized there was no way we’d have enough time and besides, can you give a 4th Grader a needle and thread and not have it be considered a weapon anymore? So I bought a ton of construction paper and turned them loose with their scissors and glue. They didn’t have to make food, the only rule was that they couldn’t draw the details, it all had to be made with the paper. Lots of them made pizza and cookies but there were also quite a few basketball courts, soccer fields, and animals. One kid even made bacon and another made a Wii. I told them they could take paper home if they wanted to make other things and i was surprised how many took me up on the offer. It was a fun morning. My creations are pretty mediocre but they were fun to make. To see some really amazing felt food, go here.
